llms.txt in practice: the file that introduces your company to AIs
What llms.txt is, how to write it, a commented example from this site's real file, and honest limitations of the standard.
If robots.txt talks to Google's bots, llms.txt talks to generative AIs. It is a simple plain-text file at the root of the site, introducing the company in direct language to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. This piece shows what it is, how to write it, and uses this site's own llms.txt as a commented example.
What llms.txt is
An open standard proposal that appeared in 2024, llms.txt is a file hosted at your-domain.com/llms.txt. AIs that respect the standard query the file to quickly understand who the company is, what it does, which pages exist and how they should be interpreted.
What it is for in practice
- Give official company context to the AI, in the company's own voice.
- Point out the most important pages with a short sentence each.
- Describe services, plans and verticals without ambiguity.
- Prevent the AI from making up data or piecing an answer from old scattered content.
How to write an llms.txt
- Start with the company name as heading.
- One-line summary in a blockquote explaining what it does.
- Official contact info (site, WhatsApp, Instagram).
- Sections by theme: About, Services, Method, Plans, Verticals.
- List of important pages with absolute URL and short description.
- Terms, principles and house phrases that should appear in answers.

What to include and what to avoid

Where to host
At the root of the site, accessible at /llms.txt. It is a static plain-text file with no authentication. Recommended size: up to 30KB. Much beyond that and the AI gives up before finishing.
Honest limitations
- Not every AI reads llms.txt today. The standard is gaining adoption but is not universal.
- It does not replace the site. It is a companion, an introduction. Real content still needs to live on browsable pages.
- It is not a shortcut for GEO. It helps, but it does not replace authority, reviews and consistency.
- It needs maintenance: new route, new city, new plan, everything should be reflected in llms.txt.
